A drinking gourd was a hollowed-out gourd used for drinking. But in this song the slaves used the term to refer to a similar shape made by the stars in the sky.&nbsp; The drinking gourd really was &#8220;The big dipper.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many rivers did they follow? Three (Tombigbee, Tennessee, Ohio). Tell them that&nbsp; there is a story about a man named Peg-leg Joe. He is the &#8220;Old Man&#8221; in this song. He put marks on trees so the slaves would know which way to go.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One might think that escaped slaves were safe in the northern statess, but they weren&#8217;t.&nbsp; Congress enacted the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fugitive_Slave_Act_of_1850\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fl\u00fcchtiger Sklavenakt <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">im Jahr 1850.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Die Underground Railroad verlief auch nach S\u00fcden \u2013 nicht zur\u00fcck zu den Sklavenhalterstaaten, sondern von ihnen weg nach Mexiko, das in den 1820er Jahren damit begann, die Sklaverei einzuschr\u00e4nken und sie schlie\u00dflich 1829 abschaffte, etwa vierunddrei\u00dfig Jahre vor Abraham Lincolns Emanzipationsproklamation.
